Shot Blasting vs. Grit Blasting: And Are Either the Best?

Industries such as oil and gas, energy, chemical, manufacturing, and marine need to be aware of the best approach to treat critical parts used in heavy-duty equipment.

Many companies rely on shot blasting or grit blasting to remove impurities from the surface of parts. However, this is a temporary fix that does not address the actual properties of the parts to enhance durability and longevity. The ultimate solution is shot peening.

Shot Blasting and Grit Blasting Limitations

– Shot blasting is typically used on metal parts to clean the parts. Beads are shot through a machine to remove impurities trying to restore the part to its original condition.

– Grit blasting (or sand blasting) is a type of protective treatment that attempts to smooth out a part. Typically, particles are propelled against the surface of the part at a high speed to remove build-up from wear and tear or exposure to difficult conditions.

While these types of treatments have their benefits of cleaning parts used in extreme environments, they cannot achieve the same results as shot peening to strengthen the parts and extend lifespan.

Why is Shot Peening a Superior Treatment?

Shot peening is a mechanical process that helps improve surface residual stresses for industrial metal parts. This enhances the life of metal for immediate and long-term use.

Shot peening is often confused with shot blasting, but these two processes have very different effects. Shot blasting is used primarily to rid metals of corrosion and rust, while shot peening is the preferred method to toughen metal and increase its strength.

The shot peening technology utilized by Superior Shot Peening consists of tiny balls of cast steel shot on the metallic surface of the parts. This process forms small indentations in the surface with enough force to sufficiently strengthen the metal and relieve stress.
