What is HVOF Coating?

The Basics of HVOF Coating

HVOF is a type of thermal spray coating process offered by Superior Shot Peening & Coatings that provides the coverage your parts need. Its main purpose is to restore or improve a surface’s properties or dimensions.

It provides a wear-resistant and high-density coating that can be used for commercial or industrial parts, especially for oil & gas companies, sewage treatment centers, aerospace companies, and chemical plant organizations.

The Application of HVOF

When we apply HVOF to parts, we use distinct alloys that melt, atomize, and propel the coating towards the surface of the equipment. The substrate temperature averages around 200 degrees Fahrenheit and is accelerated by a gas stream.

The gas stream is then produced by igniting fuel and oxygen — either in their gaseous or liquid forms — in a combustion chamber. Accelerated through a nozzle, this gas stream is introduced with a powder to heat and accelerate using kinetic and thermal energy towards the component’s surface.

This decreases the amount of warping, defects, or stresses in the substrate. The effect is that the coatings can be applied 10 times stronger than comparative coatings such as chrome, resulting in fewer chips, scratches, abrasion or wear.
